Ageing is a natural process. Many scientists dedicated a great amount of time to studying it. What you eat plays an important role in how you are going to age. There are foods that can make your skin wrinkle faster and and make you look older that you would like.
We all enjoy a glass or two of wine now and again. However alcohol is known to be a dehydrator. More so, it robs our bodies of vitamins like vitamin A, B and C. It also depletes us of minerals like magnesium and zinc.
Alcohol also depletes the body of essential fatty acids that are known to slow down the onset of premature ageing.
It is known that increase alcohol intake damages your liver. A healthy liver helps eliminate toxins from your body. When your liver doesn’t function well, toxins build-up.These can affect your skin causing a number of issues like wrinkles and acne.
Furthermore, an additional side affect of alcohol is poor sleep. This is another factor that contributes to early ageing.
To prevent early ageing, your body needs proper hydration. When a lack of hydration is associated with high intake of alcohol, this can lead to lines and wrinkles to appear faster, therefore, making your skin age faster.
Trans fats and Hydrogenated fats
Trans fats and hydrogenated fats are found in highly processed foods. As you know, those foods are pro-inflammatory. During the inflammation process free radicals are created.Free radicals can damage your DNA with time.
Trans fats are found in refined oils, emulsifiers, certain added colours and flavours.
So if they are in the majority of foods how can we avoid them? The safest way is to eat whole foods that do not come in a package. They are healthier, fulll of nutrients, vitamin and minerals. Increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables also increases your intake of water.
Above all, trans fats are associated with ageing of the brain, not only the skin.
Processed foods contain high amounts of salt and preservatives.
While, salts add to puffiness, preservatives trigger inflammation in the skin and accelerates the process of ageing.
Artificial sweeteners are present in many foods and beverages. They are very popular in many countries.
Artificial sweeteners are chemicals added to many products. They are toxic to the liver. Damaging the liver is the sure way towards the ageing process.
Furthermore, sugar molecules damage proteins, such as collagen and elastin in your skin. Those proteins are what gives the skin its elasticity and firmness, once they are damaged, your skin will have that wrinkled appearance.
I love coffee. However coffee has a dehydrating effect on the body. It works like a diuretic. Therefore, it can deplete your body of moisture and anything that can dehydrate your body can dehydrate your skin. This will give it an aged and dull look.
It has been recommended to drink a glass of water with each cup of coffee.
The results of drinking too much coffee can cause the skin to wrinkle prematurely, and become more lax with time,” says Dr. S. Manjula Jegasothy, M.D., CEO and founder of the Miami Skin Institute.
Milk and cheese
Casein is a protein found in dairy products. Some of us are sensitive to it. Casein is known to trigger inflammation.
Dairy products have been associated with numerous skin reactions such as eczema, psoriasis, itchy red scaly patches.
Many people noticed that once they’ve eliminated the dairy products from their diet, their skin health improved. However, everyone is different, and if your skin is not the reason to stop eating dairy products, here are a few other reasons.
Who doesn’t like a sugary treat?
However, it seems that today we eat too much sugar. Either from our beverages, deserts or from different food products that have added sugars in as a preservative.
Excess sugar in the blood leads to loss of collagen in the skin. This encourages the formation of wrinkles.
Sugar causes inflammation, which is a major inhibitor of having a beautiful, glowing skin.
Besides early aging too much sugar increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer’s.
While carbohydrates are necessary for our body to function well, refined carbohydrates are a different story.
Foods like pretzels, pasta, white flour, cereals have been linked to skin problems. They are highly processed whole foods that are stripped of their nutritional value and fibre, like white flour. When we eat those highly processed carbs, they become sugar in our blood. We already know how sugar can make your skin age faster.
Therefore it is recommended to eat whole foods that have not been processed. Fruits and vegetables and grains have all the healthy carbohydrates that your body needs for its health.
In conclusion, the ageing process is dependent on our diet. There are foods that can make us healthy and feel well and look good. On the other hand, there are foods that can make the ageing process faster. This will make us look older than we are. Your skin gets wrinkled and looses that glow that many healthy young people naturally have.
Do you think you drink too much coffee? Or maybe you have a sweet tooth that sometimes make you have that extra biscuit?
Nobody is perfect, however we should make health our number one goal.
